Nikki Bittner discusses the symbiotic relationship between her love for photography and her unexpected connection to the healing arts.
Embracing both the lens and the healing touch, Nikki Bittner shares her journey from Pittsford to Fairport, exploring her love for photography and the healing arts. We sat down with Nikki to ask her a few questions about her story, as she navigates the landscapes of Rochester, capturing its essence through her lens while channeling healing energies inspired by the flow of its rivers and canals.
Q: Can you tell us a little about yourself and your connection to Rochester?
A: I grew up in Pittsford and went to college in Elmira. After that, I boomeranged back to Rochester, lived downtown for a while, and eventually settled in Fairport where I raised my son.
Q: How did you get into photography?
A: It wasn't love at first sight! My dad got me a camera because he didn't think I was very scholarly. But photography grew on me. It started with capturing sunsets from my apartment balcony, then exploring different cameras, editing software, and subjects. Now, I take pictures of everything and anything, from nature scenes to senior portraits.
“What truly inspires me is the incredible talent and creativity of the people here. From artists and photographers to graffiti artists, there's a vibrant energy that makes Rochester special.”
Q: What inspires you about Rochester as a photographer?
A: The four seasons! We have rolling hills, cityscapes, and charming villages, all offering unique beauty throughout the year. It's a constant surprise.
Q: You mentioned you get the urge to pull over and take pictures while driving. Have you ever gotten any good shots that way?
A: All the time! Especially when there's snow on the trees or beautiful fall foliage. But safety first, of course. There have been times when I've pulled over in safe areas to capture the perfect shot.
Q: Have you lived anywhere else besides Rochester?
A: I lived in Pittsburgh for a while and went to college in Elmira, but Rochester has always been my home base. I've lived in different neighborhoods within the city, from downtown to Fairport, and love the community feel of Fairport.
Q: What's your most memorable experience in Rochester?
A: As a photographer, I'm drawn to water. The reflections on the Erie Canal system and the Genesee River are a constant source of fascination. There's a hidden gem of a park called Channing H. Philbrick Park with beautiful water features that I love to explore.
Q: How do you see Rochester growing in the future?
A: Honestly, I focus on the positive and don't pay too much attention to negativity. What truly inspires me is the incredible talent and creativity of the people here. From artists and photographers to graffiti artists, there's a vibrant energy that makes Rochester special.
Q: We noticed a connection between your love for water and your work as a healer. Can you tell us more about that?
A: That's an interesting observation! Yes, I'm also an energy healer. It all started with a powerful experience after my father passed away. I felt his presence and eventually developed the ability to heal others by channeling energy. There's definitely a flow to healing energy, similar to the flow of water in my photographs.
