Growing fandom for 100+ years, Wegmans is our beloved super market that has set a higher standard for the grocery shopping experience.

What makes a legend is the connection it creates with people. That’s Wegmans at its core. And it’s part of our everyday life. We don’t shop there just to check off our grocery list. It’s a weekly ritual, a familiar comfort, a shared experience that feels uniquely ours. We run into neighbors in the aisles. We spot familiar faces at the register. We bring out-of-town visitors to see the place for themselves—and to prove it really is that good.

Sure, there’s the rows of fresh produce, the specialty cheese area that rivals a French market, the assorted hand-rolled sushi. But what truly sets it apart is the feeling. Wegmans delivers more than groceries. It offers joy, abundance and ease. You can grab dinner, try something new, get cooking tips—and it feels like home. That sense of warmth, familiarity and belonging? It sticks with you. That’s the Wegmans effect.

Long before it became a household name across the East Coast, Wegmans was a humble fruit and vegetable cart on a sidewalk here in Rochester. Back in 1916, brothers Walter and John Wegman weren’t thinking of creating an empire. They were simply selling produce that was fresh, local and fairly priced. The cart grew into a stand, then a store and, over time, a brand that never lost touch with where it came from.

Four generations later, Wegmans is still a family business, guided by the same values it started with. Under the leadership of Danny Wegman and his daughters, Colleen and Nicole, the company has grown into something much bigger. But the spirit remains grounded in care, culture and community.

“Wegmans didn’t just grow in Rochester. It grew with Rochester. And in many ways, it helped shape who we are.”

Today, Wegmans operates over 110 stores across nine states and has earned national recognition for employee satisfaction, customer loyalty and innovation in the grocery industry. But for us in Greater ROC, that’s not what makes it iconic. For us, it’s personal.

This is where thousands of Rochesterians got their first job, learned responsibility and started building a career. It’s one of the region’s largest private employers, offering more than paychecks. It offers possibilities. From scholarships and culinary training to logistics and tech roles, Wegmans has helped people grow in the workplace and in life.

And the impact runs deeper than jobs. Wegmans shows up for the community, year after year. Through donations, fundraising and hands-on partnership with local nonprofits, they help tackle hunger and support families across the region. They’ve donated millions of pounds of food, raised funds through customer-led efforts and invested in things that truly matter—nutrition education, youth programs and community spaces that make neighborhoods stronger.

Truth is, Wegmans didn’t just grow in Rochester. It grew with Rochester. And in many ways, it helped shape who we are—a region that believes in quality, compassion and supporting one other.

So while this is a business success story, it’s really a story we all share. Proof that greatness can start small. That innovation can come from care. That heritage isn’t just preserved, it evolves.

No matter how far Wegmans reaches, Rochester is still its heart. And in Greater ROC, we’re proud to call it ours.

Around here, iconic isn’t rare, it’s real. So we’re shining a light on the homegrown legends more people should to know about. Follow along on Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn.
